611A- Podcasting value in repurposed episodes

In this episode of The Podcast Reporter, we review and deliver one podcaster’s perspective of the value of repurposed podcast episodes— along with key examples and proofs-of-concept.

The repurposing of episodes has been of great value to myself as a podcaster, as well as to the growing number of newer podcasters and aspiring podcasters who have joined the podosphere within the last 5 to 10 years — remember that I have had over 15 years of podcasting, and many of  my shows and their episodes have contained great content (as acclaimed by reviewers and other podcasters and listeners). Such episodes have come from the following past shows that posted evergreen content (although some have been podfaded) like the following, which is a non-inclusive list:

  • Folklorico Dance and Music;
  • The Combat Infantrymen’s Podcast show;
  • The 82nd Airborne Division Association — Alamo Chapter;
  • Entrepreneur Tools Online show;
  • The Jungle Warriors show;
  • Gain Control of Your Day show;
  • and the creation and redeployment of podcast episodes from the show in progress called The Real Academy of Life;
  • Austin Podcaster’s Meetup Show;
  • Grumpy Old Bears Show;
  • 2030 Podcast show;
  • and some other minor shows.

So, what has been the result of repurposing podcast episodes in your current or present shows? And what had to be done for the episodes that would be repurposed?

  • the value to the audience — for the newer and aspiring podcasters, these repurposed episodes will become NEW episodes that can have them engage with you and your content. And this can help you to grow your audience, as well as receive feedback via the WOMMA method (i.e., word-of-mouth-marketing-actions) about the relevance of your show. It can also help you to become a thought leader, since your “wisdom” to the audience may be coming back from the days of the origins of the podosphere — and most content can become evergreen, if it is treated as such and presented to all audiences as such.
  • the decision to re-edit the repurposed episode and make it come up to the standards of the current day. Yes, to catch up with the times of the current podcast publication dates for repurposed episodes, you may have to do a bit of EDITING on the show episodes that were previously edited before the initial publishing. And this may be very important, because this can give new energy, new life and new VALUE to your audience that it will be reaching (and many for the very first time). Thus, by updating the fringes of your podcast episodes, this can increase the value of your content and help to make your new audiences even more loyal and interested. And, yes, I have done this on numerous occasions, as the theme was evergreen, but the examples or the possible proof-of-concept would need to be updated for relevance’s sake.
  • the new and repurposed episodes can also be used as a springboard for gaining more INSPIRATION and spawning new areas to explore with content, as well as increase the value of the original content by going deeper into the subject matter and providing your audience with even more VALUE.

My experience has been to see the downloads increase substantially with the publication of the repurposed episodes. After all, if we believe that the stats from the media hosts show an increase in downloads from our recently released repurposed episodes, then we can possibly imagine that the increase in subscribers to podcasts or the emergence of new listeners within the podosphere are now engaging with our content — even though the content is being repurposed, with or without any updating.

For myself, I have seen some strategies take off with this type of decision for repurposing shows. For instance, in one of my podcast shows that is broadcast over the No Agenda Stream, I have seen that my download numbers increased — and NOT from direct subscribers or followers of my own show, but from those who listen to the stream and then get value from my content. And then they would go to my site and listen to other episodes, as well as download some or all of my back-catalog. This could be a good strategy for some podcasters, if they can have a targeted audience in which they can present themselves and their content to the right listeners who get value from their content. Well, such has been my experience — and this happened without having to pay for any kind of marketing or sales promotions or launch a marketing campaign of any sort. This was a good fortune that my content was seen as giving VALUE to an audience that receives my episode content (some of which are also repurposed) to an audience that numbers in the hundreds of thousands worldwide.

Thus, we hope that you can find a great way to repurpose your older episodes (whether updated or not) and republish them to an audience that contains the targeted listeners that will find value in your content, and thus will have your podcast grow and be successful.

509- A eulogy for podcasting — but a bit too early

In this episode of The Podcast Reporter, we discuss how your departure from podcasting and downsizing of your shows from several to just one or two may be a bit premature at the time you start to suffer from health complications due to age.

I, myself, a podcaster for the last 15 years, did feel that the world of health complications was crushing in on me and that I would have to exit from the podosphere. And so, in January of 2018, I wanted to give my listeners from the last 3 remaining podcast shows a type of eulogy that will signal my farewell (as at that time, I did feel that I was going downhill and would not recover to my previous level due to my conditions — both mental and physical, especially with the reactions to my complications resulting from exposure to Agent Orange from my experience in the Vietnam War as a combat infantryman).

So, at that time, I did present a type of eulogy to my listeners as I had just finished shutting down 5 of my then current shows. And today, I had withdrawn 15 of my shows, even though since 2018, I did add 2 more shows — and that is my situation today.

Now, besides physical health complications and aging, what other situations would force an avid podcaster to podfade his shows? Well, I know now that aging conditions that start with dementia and alzheimers (the symptoms, that is) can signify slipping into non-productive situations that may force me to podfade my shows and resign myself to treatment in the VA for PTSD, dementia and alzheimers for my injuries and wounds during my time in the service.

But at this time, I have grown much stronger since the time that I recorded my eulogy in audio for my listeners in the podosphere. And because of this, I feel that I am still going strong in the world of podcasting — and this proves that podcasting is a great way to recover from declining weakness from health and other family medical situations, even though the cause of my health situations was 50 years ago.

And so, I wanted to give you in this audio player the six-minute audio episode of this podcast series (episode 95), so that you can hear what a eulogy from podcasting would be like — and you can understand that it was premature.

So I am in recovery and still feeling strong to podcast my episodes and see that my shows are growing with great numbers of listeners and followers. In fact, I have reached a new high for listeners to another podcast show ( due to the value that others have received — and from their posting not only great reviews, but also republishing episodes in a worldwide stream that has grown my audience of listeners by many thousands.

Thus, I am living proof that age is just a number, but your mental attitude and strength to continue podcasting for passion is most important to overcome both ageism and some of the mental and physical “speed bumps” with declining health.

And for this, I am grateful to my audience, my listeners, my producers and to both Adam Curry and John C Dvorak of the show No Agenda for keeping me sane through all the craziness of 2020. I also thank Sir Ryan Bemrose and Darren O’Neill of the Grumpy old Bens show — especially for promoting my podcast episodes on the worldwide stream.

544- Different monetization strategy with premium content in Podcasting

In this episode of The Podcast Reporter, we discuss a relatively different strategy for monetization via a membership, with additional feedback and additional content where the chief objective seems to be more than just money or financial success.

The podcast from Evo Terra called Podcast Pontifications announced that they would have a membership of those who signed up for donating to the show via the .


How is this slightly different to the usual donation by other podcasters requesting money from

In this case, Evo will still continue to deliver FREE content on his main show of However, instead of donating a one-time delivery of $5 for a cup of coffee, he is now welcoming his listeners to become a MEMBER of his coffee-club. In this way, he has set aside a premium podcast aspect of his show for those who will purchase a yearly donation to his membership system. And then, he will offer additional content to those who sign up for this membership.

Well, for this podcaster, since I have always followed Evo (even though I may not agree with him on various topics he brings up — but I still respect his right to pontificate his thoughts on his show, and I listen to him with an open mind on all things — even though I understand his point of view but reserve my right to disagree due to my own critical thinking). Thus, I signed up for this membership and waited to see what type of additional content and additional deliverables would be coming to the “members.”

The answer started to come in almost immediately. I received an email from Evo  not only with his gratitude for signing up, but also with his brainstorming ideas as what type of content would be great for the membership, based on their feedback. So I looked at what he had conceived and I quickly sent an email reply back with MY OWN VALUE-BASED ideas of additional content or follow-up actions for members that Evo could deliver.

The reply from Evo was almost immediate. And I saw that he was offering different ideas, based on feedback from myself and others who joined the membership.  And I responded with an email that thanked him for his planning, and I said that his ideas seemed good enough for me. And to this day, I am waiting to see what the results will be, for I know that Evo does deliver to his audience — especially when he is able to monetize the podcast and its infrastructure for his audience to provide more VALUE.

Now, will this be a trend for other podcasters to do so?

Or, will the podcasting community go along more with Adam Curry’s “value-for-value” model in his show No Agenda with John C Dvorak  (which is also being used by Ryan Bemrose and Darren O’Neill of the Grumpy Old Bens podcast (as well as other podcasts on the

The answer is that time will tell to see which strategy will be adopted by other podcasters (or perhaps there will be NEWER strategies that will be implemented — and how successful they will be). I will be anticipating for that. And I also plan to report on the strategy from Evo and my opinion of the deliverables that will be sent to myself and others in this new “coffee-premium” audience.

So, if you wish to join a “coffee-premium” program, then you may want to listen to the podcast show with Evo Terra and decide if you want to join. 482- What it means to RETIRE from Professional Podcasting

In this episode of The Podcast Reporter, we discuss the situation of retiring from professional podcasting, but yet not leaving the podosphere either as a podcaster that creates and publishes content, and still enjoying the arena of creating and distributing your messages.

I was listening to an earlier podcast from Adam Schaeuble’s show called Podcasting Business School, and in one episode, I realized the idea of being a successful podcaster and reaching your objectives both in audience growth and monetization — but now what? How does this fare for me for the future? And what’s next for me, both as entrepreneur and podcaster or screencaster?

For this podcaster, I had a maximum of 18 podcast shows — and 16 of them at the same time in 2011. However, as the themes and topics for content dwindled because of the nature of the shows, I had to podfade them until I only had one left before I added two more.

Now, did ask myself if I had accomplished what I set out to do. I also noticed that there were more than a million podcast shows published in the podosphere (1.3 million to date, I think). So did I figure that I would continue on the road to audience growth and monetization?

Not really. And why?

Because of my health problems that hit me 3 years ago with a vengeance, and because I no longer wanted to compete with others for monetization, I realized that I had learned a lot with my experience to help others, as well as relax any stress of working harder and podcasting more — but enjoying it less.

So I thought that I could still publish my content and distribute my messages to deliver VALUE to my audience, while really feeling as if I had RETIRED from being a professional podcaster that had to make a certain amount of money from podcasting or generate more listeners. This feeling of being RETIRED came from a presentation in 1978 from Lem Jones, an instructor in the IBM Systems Science Center, in which he stated that “if you enjoy what you are doing, you are basically RETIRED for your own good, or retired from your job which you can define.”

This feeling of being FREE from the stresses of publishing content to compete with others and to compete with the environment of the podosphere led me to create even two more podcast shows (after podfading 15 of them previously due to my taking care of my own health and that of my poor mother who was suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s). And they are still going strong, without any marketing or advertising on them. In fact, one of the shows was republished on the No Agenda Stream and the speaker referred to this show as a “quality podcast.” And I did nothing to promote or market my podcast show.

So, as the very old TV sales commercial in the 1950s and 1960s said in their advertising hook “Are you smoking more but enjoying it less?”  And this tag line struck a chord with me to know that I was competing in podcasting more, but enjoying it less.

Therefore, I retired from the stress and tension of the business of podcasting — but I did not retire from the enjoyment of podcasting.

Even though I am screencasting and creating training videos for other clients, I still keep podcasting almost daily, because for me, “PODCASTING is a labor of love” in which I can get my message into content that will bring value to other podcasters and to my audiences.

So even though I still do research and create and publish content that can be of VALUE to my audience (especially lessons learned from my past and present experiences in business and podcasting), I do so on MY TERMS that result from my passion.

So, I hope that you perhaps will be thinking of your future in podcasting. What is your strategy for “retiring”? And does it contain the ability to retire, yet still continue podcasting because of your Passion for it? Remember — in the beginning of the podosphere, most of the podcasters in 2005 were passionate enough that they wanted to enter this arena and share with others their message only because they enjoyed it and many did not have any desire to monetize it.

So I will keep my passion of podcasting alive and well with this show, as well as my other two shows, even though I am basically “retired” from the podosphere as a professional podcaster.

I hope your future also includes “retiring” from the stress that may be caused by podcasting, yet enjoying the freedom to podcast in your “retirement.”
