The mail was dated <em>9 August 2020<\/em>, and the subject was: <em>&#8220;What we&#8217;ve learned so far.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In addition, as one of the earliest podcasters in 2004 and 2005, he was one of the four founders of the <strong>podcamp<\/strong> events, which are barcamp-style inbound conferences that had several good ideas &#8212; among them, no fees for everyone, and all people were participants and not attendees, and that anyone could present and share without having to be in a psuedo-elite class.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-933\" src=\"https:\/\/podcastreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Chris-Brogan-backpack-show-host.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"616\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/podcastreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Chris-Brogan-backpack-show-host.jpg 616w, https:\/\/podcastreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Chris-Brogan-backpack-show-host-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Because I have known Chris since 2010 in our in-person meeting (and since 2007 in various <em>podcamps<\/em> and other podcast meetings and entrepreneur venues), I thought that his words-of-wisdom may be beneficial for both podcasters and entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>My dealings with Chris Brogan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The last time I met in person with Chris was in 2014 at the initial <a href=\"http:\/\/podcastmovement.com\"><em><strong>Podcast Movement<\/strong><\/em><\/a> conference in Dallas, in which he was the keynote speaker to kick off the first ever conference of this type (which is still going strong, with a virtual conference scheduled for October).<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/traffic.libsyn.com\/secure\/fgcastgain\/Chris_Brogan.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before then, I had actually had an interview with him and <strong>Julien Smith<\/strong>, as co-authors of the book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audible.com\/pd\/Trust-Agents-Revised-and-Updated-Audiobook\/B004DJ7NWC?source_code=GPAGBSH0508140001&amp;ipRedirectOverride=true&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwvb75BRD1ARIsAP6Lcqs4us5O88FBHrgIeDGB_7aMUmn0rBHG09NcqyliIRV3_SLtOe7ByHsaAu3wEALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\"><em><strong>Trust Agents<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. And we discussed the plights and tribulations and benefits that faced the entrepreneur at the time. Endless Zoom calls (remember Skype?), and every speaker and podcaster friend I know getting back into video. A &#8230;point of contact. Then, I shifted it to be a way to &#8230;catch up. Then, I knew I wanted to do it even better, so I brought Kerry O\u2019Shea Gorgone in as consiglieri and co-host, and that\u2019s the show.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Last week, I talked about the graphics changing the world. I thought I\u2019d share some more learnings from the show as they apply to YOUR business and how to promote.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Steal These Learnings<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Package<\/b> &#8211; the ads and graphics conversation from last week covers this. You need visuals to really pop the projects you work on. Naming something is good. LABELING it is better.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Guide The Community<\/b> &#8211; doing the <a href=\"https:\/\/rt947.infusion-links.com\/api\/v1\/click\/4560841512976384\/6281436856320000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/rt947.infusion-links.com\/api\/v1\/click\/4560841512976384\/6281436856320000&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597049732142000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHz6x8S9fOR3HL-3FFnCusiAARPRA\">Backpack Show<\/a> for a little while now, it\u2019s easy to feel like everyone\u2019s been there to see every episode. There\u2019s always someone new, so be crisp in guiding people through every experience. \u201cIt\u2019s a business show, but with morning show energy\u201d is one of our taglines because we\u2019re setting the stage for what to expect. Do this often.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Promote<\/b> &#8211; we\u2019re getting ready to do a few Facebook ads to see if that pumps the numbers. Feels like it will. For as much as I ever tweet, or if Kerry tweets, that still drives very little traffic. If the guest shares the show with their community, the show pops.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Go Beyond <\/b>&#8211; our guest list over the last few weeks and upcoming shows:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Mountain climber<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Former pro football player\/CEO<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Professional comedians (2)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Magician\/Positioning Expert<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Broadway actor\/singers (2)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The voice of Siri<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>NASCAR driver<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Pro wrestler<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>YouTube celebrities (2)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Poop doctor<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Chef<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Adult film star and model<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Futurists (2)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>What\u2019s interesting is that every time we invite one of our marketing or sales or business peers or friends, the results of attendance are mixed. Fewer views and less engagement for people in my same industry. Much more attendance and energy around the more unique guests.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Unknown is whether the perceived value of attending one type of show versus another changes. If you learn something from Daniel Pink or whoever, does it matter if fewer people see it than Scotland\u2019s darling Janey Godley (who had 100x more views)?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Community-Driven<\/b> &#8211; you know me. Everything I do has a massive community element. The show has live comments. We just launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/rt947.infusion-links.com\/api\/v1\/click\/6129234116476928\/6281436856320000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/rt947.infusion-links.com\/api\/v1\/click\/6129234116476928\/6281436856320000&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1597049732142000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHDa7VMK-t913moRaqqZ52NArfFOw\">show email<\/a>. We talk to guests and the community all the time on places like Twitter. Even more gratifying is we see people reach out and embrace our guests and thus expand those people\u2019s communities even more. Threading together good people is the primary driving force behind how we execute the show.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Worth Checking Out \/ Thinking About<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Not directly related to the show, but maybe so, it\u2019s worth thinking about a few details:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>People are consuming more video every day.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Very short form (sub 1 minute) and long form (over 30 minutes) seem to be the highest growth categories.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Instagram continues to gain attention share away from Twitter, Facebook, and the other social networks.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Email marketing is still the best platform for people hoping to do business with people and not just entertain.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>People continue to make the transition from laptops\/desktops to mobile-only computing\/device usage. It\u2019s a mobile world. Plan your business around that.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><b>Finally &#8211; It\u2019s the Work<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You have what you sell and all that entails, but this &#8211; *waves hands around* &#8211; is also the work. Make content that engages. Connect with people around that content. It\u2019s an easy model:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Content &#8212; Community &#8212; Marketplace<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Build content that attracts people<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nurture those people into a community you serve<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Articulate a marketplace that serves that community<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That\u2019s your work. Not just being good at your job. Not just running your company. It must be visible.
