And in this post, there are links and audio players that prove the point of origin of both the eclosure and the word <em>podcast<\/em> in his experience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As Eric Nuzum discusses elsewhere here, the first <em>audio referenced by an enclosure tag in an RSS feed<\/em>\u00a0was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/podnews.net\/article\/first-podcast-feed-history\">published on Jan 20, 2001<\/a>; with Dave Winer placing one song by the\u00a0<em>Grateful Dead<\/em>\u00a0into a post, as a test.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Lydon is generally held to have the published the first ever\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/lydondev\/2003\/07\/09\/spoken-word-a-few-good-bloggers\/?utm_source=podnews.net&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_campaign=podnews.net:2021-10-05\">original piece of\u00a0<em>audio referenced by an enclosure tag in an RSS feed<\/em><\/a> on Jul 9, 2003&#8230;The first program to automatically grab an audio show like this, originally called RSS2iPod, was launched by Adam Curry on <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090222185407\/http:\/\/radio.weblogs.com\/0001014\/2003\/10\/12.html#a4604\">Oct 12, 2003<\/a>&#8230;But these audio shows did not have a name. Yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Next, there is a viewpoint of the word <em><strong>&#8220;Podcasting&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> that takes place, with examples and sound bytes, as well. And it all boiled down to <em><strong>Dave Winer<\/strong><\/em>, credited with creating the podcast episode (along with our <em><strong>Podfather, Adam Curry<\/strong><\/em>):<\/p>\n<p>The term <em>&#8220;is credited <a href=\"https:\/\/guykawasaki.com\/david-winer\/?utm_source=podnews.net&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_campaign=podnews.net:2021-10-05\">by Dave Winer<\/a>, speaking in Guy Kawasaki\u2019s podcast Remarkable People:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Adam had the initial idea for why this made sense at that particular point in time. This was the first meeting that we had, and this goes back to 2000.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He saw me do it, and then he started doing it. And then, I don\u2019t know, by September of 2004, there were twenty or thirty people doing [it], and we needed a name. And so we had a mail list and I asked people, \u201cWhat should we call this?\u201d And a guy named Dannie Gregoire said, just call it \u201cpodcasting.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And Adam and I were doing a podcast called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/secrets.scripting.com\/?utm_source=podnews.net&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_campaign=podnews.net:2021-10-05\">Trade Secrets<\/a>, and on that we discussed it. So let\u2019s just go with podcasting, and that\u2019s it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Guy Kawasaki: That\u2019s how podcasting got named?!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dave Winer: What did you think? We hired some kind of a market research firm and they did a focus groups and shit? Come on! That wasn\u2019t how it worked!&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And then Cridland also records the words by<em><strong> Adam Curry<\/strong> <\/em>about the naming of the word. And a section of the post ends with the first mention of the term &#8220;podcast.&#8221; And so, the term caught on, as is stated: <em>&#8220;The term was quickly taken up. Adam Curry mentioned podcasting on his blog for the first time on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20040922035146\/http:\/\/www.blognewsnetwork.com\/members\/0000001\/2004\/09\/21.html#a6593\">Sep 21 2004<\/a>; Dave Winer blogged &#8216;what is podcasting?&#8217; on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20040930225119\/http:\/\/secrets.scripting.com\/whatIsPodcasting\">Sep 24 2004<\/a>, by Doc Searls, who blogged about podcasts on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20041011020427\/http:\/\/garage.docsearls.com\/node\/view\/462\/\">Sep 28 2004<\/a>, and Dan Gillmor on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20041010202320\/http:\/\/weblog.siliconvalley.com\/column\/dangillmor\/archives\/010836.shtml#010836\">Sep 28 2004<\/a>.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And then some of the earlier podcasters stated the term, as well, in the media: <em>&#8220;As an example that the term was already well-embedded, Todd Cochrane posted the first \u201cGeek News Central Podcast\u201d on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20041010065909\/http:\/\/www.geeknewscentral.com\/archives\/003171.html\">Oct 9 2004<\/a>; and, on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20041019010304\/http:\/\/www.webtalkradio.com\/blog\/22.shtml\">same day<\/a>, Rob Greenlee posted a comment announcing the new name on the Web Talk Radio Show website. Evo Terra followed on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20041014010011\/http:\/\/www.dragonpage.com:80\/current.html\">Oct 13, 2004<\/a>.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The post finally ends with the question of &#8220;who invented the term <em><strong>podcast<\/strong><\/em>?&#8221; And so, the final reply to this inquiry is delivered from the viewpoint of Mr. James Cridland: &#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Ben Hammersley was the first to use the term in print, in a widely-read publication.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dannie J Gregoire was the person to make the term popular in the community: and it\u2019s very possible that without Gregoire\u2019s use of the term in Sep 2004 &#8211; and its enthusiastic use by Adam Curry and Dave Winer &#8211; we\u2019d be calling\u00a0audio referenced by an enclosure tag in an RSS feed something quite different.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In my own viewpoint, the term podcasting has meaning for us early podcasters as requiring an RSS feed and adhering to certain criteria &#8212; which, today, is being &#8220;bastardized&#8221; by the younger set that want to define it in their own way, just because they wish to do so.<\/p>\n<p>But for myself, the older meaning and etymology will stand as the true types for the terms. Why?
