46- From Podcasting Success Secrets – anatomy of a new co-host podcast Joint Venture

This episode has 3 individual entrepreneurs in a single interview, so that we can learn about the lessons learned in this live case study where we review the anatomy of a successful Joint Venture / partnership. The joint venture partners are D’Vorah Lansky and Doug Foresta, and their venture started with the 30-Day Podcasting Challenge, and their web site for the podcast is Podcasting Success Secrets.

45- Podcast monetization strategies — an Interview repurposed

Screencasting and Podcasting

  • Screencasting is the technology to capture what’s on your computer screen and save that as a video file.
  • The 4 General Types of Content
    • Audio – narrating, explaining, music, intro-outro, etc.
    • Video –
      • Live action – created with camera [FC note: commonly referred to as “full-motion video”]
      • B-roll – old video files rolled together
    • Presentation slides – sequence of slides delivered via PowerPoint or a similar software, incorporating pictures, words and animations to bring a story to life.
    • Screencasting – showing people how you do something directly on your computer screen. Gives them a peek into the “back office.”
  • Combining the four types of content via a software like Camtasia creates visually compelling content that tells a story and makes people feel more comfortable buying your product or using your service.
  • Itunes is now displaying Video podcasts with a video symbol by it. Sometimes these podcasts are getting more attention than traditional audio only podcasts. Having audio and visual options makes your show attractive to people who like to listen as well as people who want to watch programs and increases your audience.

42- From Paul Colligan’s book ‘HOW TO PODCAST’– a case study

In this episode of PodcastReporter.com, we deliver a chapter (really a case study) from the book by Paul Colligan titled:

How to Podcast 2015: 4 Simple Steps to Broadcasting Your Message to the Entire Connected Planet –Even if you don’t really know what Podcasting is.

This is an audio narration of the chapter of the case study. In the paperback edition of the book, this case study is told from pages 139 to 146. It is the story of Fred Castaneda — a New Media content creator and producer who is a podcaster, screencaster and video consultant for small businesses, startups and entrepreneurs.

The case study centers around how Fred makes his podcasts happen — of course, it is related to the 4 steps that Paul Colligan describes in creating, publishing and promoting podcast shows.

As you will hear in this audio episode, Fred has been podcasting since 2006, and the workflow and processes he adopted were from Scott Whitney’s podcast show in 2006 called Podcasting For Business. They were originally called “The 4 Ps of Podcasting.”

Although Fred had been publishing more than 14 podcast shows all at the same time in 2010, he has podfaded all but 7 of them today. There are several podcast shows for non-profit organizations (which are not in iTunes(R), as they are targeted for specific niches). But the key commercial podcasts are:

41- Update- Hall of Fame for Podcasters — and Bumpers

After having to go on a business trip that took over a week, I apologize to my listeners for my forced absence, and thus not publishing an episode before episode 40 (which was repurposed from an interview I did with Adam Curry).

In this episode, we discuss and bring you up to date with 4 key topics:

(1) The Academy of Podcaster Awards (and point you to an earlier episode where we interviewed Gary Leland, who gave us the details of this and the Hall of Fame);

(2) The first 2 inductees to the Hall of Fame for Podcasters — i.e., ADAM CURRY and Leo LaPorte;

(3) The availability of PODCAST ALLEY at New Media Expo in April, 2015 (i.e., what it is and where to go to sign up for free);

NOTE:

What we had planned to bring to you as an additional report was the topic of Twitter Bombing. However, this topic was completely and very well covered by both Dave Jackson in his School of Podcasting podcast episode, as well as Rob Walch in the podcast called The Feed. Thus, we will not re-invent the wheel, and we will cover bumpers for podcasts instead.

40- Adam Curry discusses podcast quality and New Media

This is repurposed content from the inaugural episode of Skills in Screencasts and Podcasts, and it delivers an interview with the “Podfather,” Adam Curry, who discusses New Media importance in the areas of podcasting and screencasting.

This interview was conducted at the downtown Austin Hilton Hotel, where the noise was at a high level, but we found the quietest place to be in the business office just off the lobby. We apologize for the background noise and ambient sounds.

Around 2011, there was a movement from the New Media community of content creators to try to get bloggers to add Podcasting to their skills and join the podcasting community — mainly to grow their audience and add another channel for their content.

In 2014, the current movement is to try to get the podcasters to add screencasting to their skill-set — and vice-versa, get screencasters to add podcasting to their skills portfolio. The idea is to grow their audience and increase the possibilities of monetization, generate additional revenue streams and exploit new channels for content distribution.

As you will hear in this audio episode, Adam Curry discusses the models for podcasters and screencasters, as well as quality in the production of New Media content.

About Adam Curry:

Born in 1964, he is “on the cusp” of the Baby Boomer range, and is one of the “last of the official Baby-Boomers.” He also has had a history of financial success in making millions, then spending them all, and then finally of being an Entrepreneur that found happiness by living his passion as a “Government Legislation Analyst” in his latest business of podcasting with his show of No Agenda.

After over 7 years of building a loyal audience, he  has proven that the road to his full-time Entrepreneurship is with the business model which he has proven successful — known as the VALUE-FOR-VALUE model.

But to many others in the New Media arena, Adam Curry is also known as the “Pod-Father” —  since he and Dave Winer created the ability to implement successful podcasting. It was this breakthrough that allowed him to explore audio podcasting and create a show that still has a tremendous worldwide following of loyal listeners (known by Adam as “producers” — like the ones in the Hollywood model of entertainment).

This came after a career with MTV and broadcasting. His media experience saw him as part of Mevio.com, (previously known as Podshow) with different podcasts that he also started (like the Daily Source Code).

However, almost seven years ago, he started his flagship podcast show called NO AGENDA with his co-host, columnist John C. Dvorak. As an entrepreneur, he has developed the format and content of the show.

You will notice that Adam Curry has several “firsts” in his success as a full-time podcaster-entrepreneur:

(1) He provides docoumented deconstruction, information of value and entertainment;

(2) He created his own position and title as a Government Legislation Analyst. Yes, he actually READS, analyzes and deciphers each governmental bill, proclamation, executive order, and United Nations document–and he even highlights the pertinent sections that can provide you, the listener, with critical thinking and and intelligent basis for making decisions and being well-informed. The documents and other valuable information are part of his extraordinary show notes, which are free to the listener from his podcast web site.

(3) He has proven that his business model of VALUE-FOR-VALUE can be a successful one (and so far, a sustainable one) by building a loyal audience and receiving willing donations for the value that the audience receives.

38- Virtual Event- Business Podcaster Summit – a review

In this audio episode, we deliver a review of the Business Podcaster Summit online conference — aka a Virtual Event — for podcasters who want to establish podcasting as a business or take their podcasts to the next level in monetization or profit strategies.

 As you will hear in this audio episode, this virtual event took place during the last two weeks of January, 2015. With a dozen sessions delivered by speakers chosen by two of the folks that started Podcast Movement (the conference), the topics ranged from Building Podcast Communities and Creating Mailing lists via Podcasting to Crowdfunding — and more.

I myself attended the conference online during the live presentations. I tried to get some of the materials, slides and download the audio episode and chatroom transcripts — although some of these were not readily available, even after a few days of the live session.

Overall, I feel that the summit provided great value to those who could not attend the previous Podcast Movement conference (or get the content from the virtual ticket) — as most of these selected speakers also spoke at the August, 2014, conference (many times with the same or related presentation). In fact, this review highlights what I considered the top 3 sessions.

Of course, even though there were only 12 sessions of 50 to 60 minutes each, an attendee always wishes that there had been more sessions — especially from well-known business successes and thought leaders with monetization in podcasting, such as Paul Colligan, Daniel J Lewis and others (whose absence was considerably noticed by experienced podcasters).

Indeed, for those who could not attend the live sessions, the replays have a web page for those paying customers — and as soon as they are available, they will add more value to the podcasters who want to consume the content from this virtual event.

It will be interesting to see the content and sessions from the upcoming Podcast Movement 2015 conference and the subsequent Business Podcaster Summit.

36- Strategies in combining video, screencasts and podcasts – Dave Jackson discussion

In this episode, we have REPURPOSED a discussion from the podcast show called Skills In Screencasts and Podcasts.  It is about strategies to combine screencasting, audio podcasting and video for an entrepreneur business.

Key to this discussion is the description that Dave Jackson gives us about his business and multiple podcasts.  Dave is one of the very first podcasters in 2005, who is known as “The Podcast Coach” and headmaster of The School of Podcasting show and Premium Membership Site Program.

ASK-the-Podcast-Coach-on-iTunesAs you will also hear in this audio episode, we also go into a discussion about how you, as a podcaster, screencaster or content creator can incorporate public info and published audio clips (such as from a podcast episode) to discuss themes, topics and issues that were previously talked about by a possible interviewee (but who may be unavailable — e.g., he may be so busy that this individual cannot participate in your show).

We take the example of Dave Jackson and his clip that was used in this episode — and then use this format to create content around the clip. For us, it is almost like having an interview without the interviewee in a live interview.

34- Building a Podcast Brand in a niche market- Jason Bryant

As a very young man, Jason Bryant always wanted to be a sports broadcaster. In his youth, he acquired the skills and experience to pursue his dream. And with the advent of podcasting, he is accomplishing his dream as an entrepreneur while being fully engrossed in the world of college wrestling and sports podcasting.

In addition, Jason has also created his own podcast network with seven podcast shows — all within his niche of sports podcasts, especially wrestling. – President, National Wrestling Media Association;

– former NWMA Wrestling BROADCASTER OF THE YEAR;

– former AWN Bob Dellinger WRESTLING WRITER OF THE YEAR.

His small business that he started rather recently brings in revenue with the offerings and services which he provides to his customers, the schools with wrestling programs.

A family man with his wife and young child, he is struggling at this time to strengthen his brand building with awareness, as well as delivering proofs-of-concept to his network of contacts (which he develops, nurtures and engages with professionalism).

As you will also note in this audio episode, Jason has been successful without having to go the route of a formal business plan. Indeed, he does have his self-developed  “marketing kit” which he uses to prepare the engagement of new clients to his programs.

And even though the road may be filled with all sorts of related opportunities, it is clear that his passion for sports broadcasting in the wresting arena (i.e., the wresting “mat”) will not be diluted by chasing after other types of “distractions.” That is, he has no plans to start a podcast about podcasting or other topics that may have become saturated in the podosphere.

However, he does consider himself a mentor that will talk to others interested in the niche and technology, and he will offer his counsel and advice, just to help out and “give back” to the podcast community. But his direction is to stay firm on the road of podcasting for his clients and to stay on the wrestling “mat.”

32- Interview with Doug Welch – “Podcasting Pioneer” & early podcaster

In our final stage of our mini-series of interviews with the earliest of podcasters, we deliver an interview with Baby Boomer Douglas E. Welch — of the very first podcasters (with the nickname of “PODCAST PIONEER”) in the podosphere (since September, 2004). He was also one of the very first New Media content producers who standardized in (1) repurposing content from a written column or blog: and (2) using screencasts to provide additional value to all 6 of his early podcast shows; and (3) taking a lead in organizing virtual events in the Bar-Camp style of un-conferences.

Douglas had his first podcast, Career Opportunities, and then added 5 more shows to become a prolific podcaster in multiple genres — from business, careers, gardening, finance, and high-tech discussions.

His background is creative and not conventional — he was a THEATER major in college, but he was successful as an Entrepreneur for many years with his freelance computer-and-LAN installation-and-support business.

As you will hear in this audio episode, crawling under tables and desks to install or unclog the coils of cable that grow in IT locations was something less than desirable. So he decided to go into helping others with counsel, advice, public speaking, presentations and consulting for New Media, including screencasting, podcasting, video, blogging and other New Media areas.
