07- Early podcaster managing “podcatchers” and new genres- Rob Greenlee

 Rob Greenlee — early podcaster and the Zune Marketplace

 Rob Geenlee’s background started very early in radio broadcasting and the earliest times for audio creation, distribution and syndication with the systems that pre-dated podcasting.

After his early years of being involved with a system that turned out to be today’s Stitcher (from a relationship with “Melodeo Mobilcast”), he then joined Microsoft.

Note: As you will hear in this audio episode, It is strange that in 2003, Microsoft had a type of “podcasting” system called “Sync ‘n Go.” This synchronized audio and video shows with the early Pocket PC from Windows XP. However, the system was not pursued by the company.

While at Microsoft, Rob was the voice and the contact in charge of the Zune Marketplace, up until the first quarter of 2014. During the seven years he spent at Microsoft, he attended just about every Podcasting event, Podcamp, New Media Expos, South-by-SouthWest (SXSW), etc.

He was different than Apple during that time, for he actually answered his phone and gave you an email ID. He communicated with you and even included your feed to list your podcast in the Zune Marketplace — whereas Apple (the 800-pound gorilla) gave no one any contact information or communicated in any way with the podcasters once they submitted their podcasts to iTunes.

This year, Rob had joined Podcast One as the CTO (chief technology officer). He continues in that role, as marketer, technical evangelist and supporter of podcasting in this INDUSTRY (he agrees that it is an industry).

For the past several years, Rob had teamed up with early podcaster Todd Cochrane of RawVoice and the Blubrry network to be a co-host of the podcast show The New Media Show. It is still going strong, and the guests brought into the discussions in this show are relevant to podcasting, as well as other aspects of New Media.

Not only is The New Media Show a free podcast, but it is streamed live in video on weekends from the infrastructure of Todd Cochrane’s Geek News Central environment.

He and Todd Cochrane will be doing a panel discussion at the upcoming Podcast Movement conference. Their experience and skills in communication have always been shown in the podcasting events, both as speakers and as sponsors of booths in the exhibit halls with their respective companies.

And lastly, he also writes articles for the issues of Podertainment magazine from Gary Leland.

 Perspectives about Podcasting Trends & Directions

Rob sees the future as an approaching environment with three businesses and spaces:

– Podcasting;

– Radio; and

– Broadcasting

These media are bringing more advertisers to Podcasting, while the agreed-upon “renaissance” of podcasting is exploding by both the consumers and creators of content. He agrees that we are on a roller-coaster ride for the present, especially with the advent of Apple’s inclusion of the Podcast app in September 2014 in iOS8.

He also sees mobile consumption of podcasts being supported by automobiles, as well as convenient and automatic recognition of your favorite podcasts by smarter mobile devices and systems — as he stated, “it has to be as easy as FM Radio in your car; it has to be that simple.” He sees more and more content coming into the podosphere with new genres. In fact, he is doing that currently with his podcasting support at Podcast One.

06- Early podcaster and author of podcast book- Rob Walch

One of the first entrepreneurs and podcasters, as well as an early adopter for content creation and content production is Rob Walch, the current Vice-President of Podcaster Relations for Libsyn, known as one of the most popular media hosting companies.

But Rob is much more than just a podcaster. He is also a book author, as well as an app developer for the iOS platform, and a representative of Libsyn at Podcasting and New Media events. In fact, in some circles (and in google.com), Rob has been described as one of the five (5) most influential people in podcasting.

In addition to co-hosting the official Libsyn podcast called The Feed, as well as hosting his own www.podcast411.com podcast show, Rob has also co-authored a book for podcasters in 2006-2007, which was called Tricks of the Podcasting Masters.

Rob was one of the very first podcasters who had the marketing expertise, promotional ability and technical skills to create, promote and support podcasting. He was known as the “man who could dissect an RSS feed,” as he quickly got the reputation of technical wizard for making a podcast show work via the internals of a podcast feed.

Very early on, Rob Walch has his own podcast show called podcast411, which he likes to call “Inside the Podcasters’ studio” (similar to the television show about Actors and Directors). On the web site for this show, Rob also provided 2 elements to support the podcasting Industry and community:

– A Directory of Podcasting Directories; and

– A tutorial that provides the novice with a course that teaches the basic elements of How to Podcast, called The Podcast 101 Tutorial on Audio Podcasting.

In the early days of podcasting, Rob was a co-host on the podcast show called Today in Podcasting (along with Dave Jackson, Gary Leland and Paul Colligan). This was the first show that gave a weekly account of the current events, personalities, events and happenings in the podosphere.

Today, Rob currently supports the Podcast Industry and community on various blogs and social network sites that support podcasters. He also represents podcasters, in general, at the New Media events while working for Libsyn.

Rob Walch — perspectives of the Podcasting Industry

With the upcoming release of iOS V8 for the iOS devices (which includes the iPhone(R), the iPad(R) and iPod Touch(R), Rob is promoting and encouraging current podcasters to take their business to the next level by creating a mobile app for their podcast. The new iOS release will spur a growth in podcasting, since the podcast app will be native to the systems and cannot be deleted, Rob encourages. And thus, millions of new podcast listeners will come into the podosphere.

As you will hear in this audio episode, Rob mentions that the future of podcasting is going mobile and that an app presence in all the app stores and marketplaces for all Apple and Android, etc.., platforms is critical.

By the way, he predicted this five years ago when he created and promoted his own app called Tii (This Week in iOs, which was previously know since 2007 as This Week in iPhone). Thus, Rob leads the way by example in this regard for the trend in the Podcasting Industry.

Rob has an advantage in seeing the Podcasting Industry in a different light, as he reviews the statistics for the Libsyn-hosted apps and podcasts. He can, therefore, bring analytics to a more relevant and swift conclusion to give us a “heads-up” of the state of podcast consumption.

Rob will also be a speaker at the Podcast Movement conference in Dallas, Texas in 2014. This is not new for him, for he has attended and been a guest speaker at every podcasting event, business show, Podcamp and conference since 2005.

05- The “Podcast Pickle” publishes since 2004- Gary Leland

Sometimes the Entrepreneur who takes the risk and enters a new area as an early entrant or early adopter becomes successful in the new environment.

Such is the history of Baby Boomer Gary Leland, an Entrepreneur who made his mark in the Retail environment with a “brick-and-mortar” store — and has also seen success in the tech environment via podcasting, video and information marketing.

You will also notice that Gary is not a perfectionist when it comes to editing his podcasts. And, thus, to honor him in this regard, we have delivered to you the UNEDITED interview from beginning to end. (Thanks, Gary!)

An early podcaster since 2004 — “TODAY IN PODCASTING”

 As you will hear in this audio episode, Gary entered the podcasting environment in 2004. His first podcasts dealt with the sports arena, in particular girls’ fast-pitch softball. This was natural, as his business also sold equipment for that environment to the public.

Gary then had a podcast called Podcast Pickle. In addition, he created a directory of podcasts, which he also named Podcast Pickle. In fact, in the spirit of fun and humor and enjoyment for various podcast events, Gary created a comic life-sized character called THE PODCAST PICKLE, and this character appeared at different Podcamps, Podcast and Portable Media Expos, and other venues.

However, Gary was the ringleader of creating a show called Today in Podcasting. This was a panel of 4 podcasters that included also Rob Walch from podcast411, Dave Jackson of The School of Podcasting, and Paul Colligan with his Podcast Tools podcast, as well as Marketing Online Live. This podcast show started in February of 2006 and continued to late 2011.

Gary was presenting at different events — from the Podcast and New Media Expos, NMX, South-by-SouthWest (SXSW), Podcamps, etc. In fact, he was a pioneer for Second Life, the virtual world that was very popular in 2007-2008. Gary was the owner of Podcast Island, which was monetized profitably by Gary.

And now, Gary is in the process of launching a new podcast show called The Gary Leland show. The targeted community for this show would be entrepreneurs who sell tangible products that would be shipped to customers anywhere. This may seem strange, but this audience does NOT include small business owners who want an electronic or online business.

 

A current co-initiator of Podcast Events — Podcast Movement

One objective that Gary has is to bring back the excitement, fun, community and education that existed in 2005 through 2008 in the original Podcast Expos. And thus, he was one of the four founders of the new event starting in 2014 called Podcast Movement.

In addition to his electronic magazine / app called Podertainment, as well as his podcasts, Gary has been active as one of the participant founders of the Podcast Conference called Podcast Movement. This was designed to be an event specifically for Podcasters (unlike the New Media Expo, which also includes bloggers, video producer and content creators).

Created as a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign, it was successful in raising the basic target amount to fund the event within the targeted due date.

 Industry Perspectives from the “Podcast Pickle” — aka “P-Dilly”

 As you will hear in this podcast episode, Gary sees podcasting as a strong community in its second revival, especially due to Apple’s including the Podcast app in its iOS8 operation system. However, he does not feel that it is yet an “industry.” As he said, though, it appears very close to becoming one.

Gary’s perspectives deal with the upcoming and current new technologies as key for the direction of podcasting. One case-in-point is his own electronic magazine called Podertainment for any iOS device.

With the growth of the audience by sheer investigation of the podcast app, and also with the growing number of people and entrepreneurs entering the podosphere as podcasters who will be publishing their content, it is a bright future for those enveloped in podcasting.

 

Electronic Magazine for the Podcast Community – Podertainment

At the annual event, New Media Expo, Gary Leland now announced the launch of his latest venture into a different business — the Electronic Magazine business. It is called Podertainment at www.podertainment.com.

PodertainmentAs we mentioned, he was an early adopter in Podcasting — and he learned how to monetize that with a couple of shows that he created, as well as being one of the first to create a Podcast Directory (aka “Podcast Pickle”). This shows his never-ending sense of humor, and so he will always remain for us with his nicknames of “P-dilly” and “Podcast Pickle.”

In addition, he moved into video and has over 200 episodes of Softball video. He also entered the virtual world of Second Life several years ago and had a fun run with Podcast Island, with a fair ROI.

04- Dave Jackson- Podcaster since 2005 with The School of Podcasting

Since 2005, Dave Jackson has put his educational background of Technical training and teaching into practice, for he has considered himself to be the “headmaster” at the School of Podcasting.

Dave’s history includes being one of the very early adopters and content creators and content producers in Podcasting. As he states himself:

“I’ve been podcasting since April of 2005. My podcast about podcasting has been downloaded over 800,000 times … I’ve helped hundreds of people launch podcasts. You can hear my podcasts on this site [i.e., School of Podcasting] as well as powerofpodcasting.com, morepodcastmoney.com, weeklywebtools.com, logicalloss.com, feedingmyfaith.com, growyourchurchshow.com,  marketingmusician.com”

He also publishes a podcast where he makes his life an open book within the stream-of-consciousness method of personal-life podcasting in Building a Better Dave.

Perspectives from “YOUR PERSONAL PODCAST COACH”

 From Dave’s viewpoint (and from statistics from Rob Walch, VP of Podcaster relations for Libsyn.com — as well as a podcaster himself of the shows The Feed and podcast411), podcasting is growing and will continue to boom.

Although Dave feels that it is not yet an “industry,” the community is skyrocketing, i.e. “up and up and up.”  As you will hear in this audio episode, he cites that his clients who wish to start podcasts or need podcast editing services are new and want to get into podcasting for their entrepreneurial ventures. A great deal of them are in the “frosty-haired” generation — that is, in their late-40s and 50s.

No longer just for the geeks, podcasting is bringing in other audiences. As Dave mentions, many young “YouTube-publishers” are now adding audio podcasting to their business and marketing–and they are bringing their audiences with them..

In his opinion, the benefits for podcasters are greatest at the podcast-specific conferences. The reason:  the one-to-one networking that creates long-lasting personal and business relationships. This was true since the days of Podcast and Portable Media Expos, the New Media Expos, the Podcamps, and the newly formed Podcast Movement.

He feels that podcasting conferences will “pick up” and grow — both nationally and regionally or locally — thanks to the passion of podcasters, both veterans and newbies. These include both Podcamps and local Meetups (i.e., www.meetup.com). Also, the electronic communities will grow, such as the groups on Facebook.com and on google hangouts and webinar jams (such as Podcasters Roundtable).

Dave has seen that little “circles” of tight-knit podcasters exist, where one group has no idea of the existence of the others.

One issue that Dave brought up was the rush of “copy-cats” to build a business around someone else’s successful business model. In particular, we discussed the recent “daily entrepreneur-interview shows” that have launched within the past year. Depending on the business model and the strategy, these imitators may not see success as quickly as they want. Expectations for a quick monetization results may be set too high, because they may have arisen from the “quantity” strategy of cpm-based revenues.

One last issue that we discussed was the re-incarnation of another “University” for the podcasting community with the upcoming program called “Podcast Movement University.”  As stated in the audio episode, it was attempted in 2006 and 2012, and both attempts went nowhere. As Dave said, the jury is still out on this next attempt, and a lot has to do with the business model, as well as creating competition with existing podcasters who already have membership sites and electronic learning centers for podcasters.

And Dave’s final ideas that he shared with us revolved around his excellent customer service to help aspiring podcasters succeed — not only with his School of Podcasting site and Ask the Podcast Coach free electronic weekly meetup for the podcast community, but also because he really becomes a sincere and dedicated Personal Podcast Coach. And thus, he becomes YOUR Personal Podcast Coach (which is his brand and tag line).

As an author, Dave helps podcasters to monetize podcasts.

03- CC chapman – early podcaster since 2004

C.C. Chapman, the Podcaster and Content Producer

CC. was one of the individuals who started seriously as an early adopter and content producer and content creator in the area of blogging and podcasting. In fact, he was one of the first 50 podcasters in the world when it all started in 2004-2005. In this episode, he shares his perspectives on the Podcast Industry.

He currently has his flagship podcast, Managing the Gray.

This is the current podcast for CC Chapman, and it has been around for quite a while.

He has also had other various podcast shows. Since December 21, 2004, he finally hit the “record” button from his computer and started recording (since he finally got his iPod (R) ). Thus, he started a music podcast in January, 2005, called Accident HashThis was a very natural journey, since he had been involved with indie films. This was one of the very first signed podcast (on Adam Curry’s podshow — later called Mevio), and he was one of the several participants who pursued the podsafe music network for podcasters.

And since his podcast exposure grew, he was asked to be a speaker for Podcast gatherings, as well as international events (e.g., in Cologne, Germany, for Podcasting Day in 2005). These were “gigs” with some compensation for public speaking.

And, as an early adopter of podcasting and content creation and content producing, C.C. launched other podcast shows (some of which are on iTunes) — among them The U-Turn Cafe, Cast of Dads and Media Hacks.

CC’s Perspectives on Podcast Industry Trends & Directions

 As you will hear in this audio episode, CC Chapman still thinks that podcasting is still a very “niche” format, as opposed to mainstream media, where the niche podcasts still do the best in terms of loyal followers.

Since 2005, the quality of sound — as well as the ease of recording and publishing — has improved so that anyone can push a record button, and then press one other button to publish content to the world of communities. But the content is still the king.

CC’s perspectives on the audience is based on the COMMUNITY or FAN-base of loyal advocates to consume the content, where audio content lends itself to a very intimate engagement with the subscriber or listener.

And CC agrees that podcasting should be CONSIDERED as part of your marketing in your business, if you are an Entrepreneur. The question you must ask yourself is whether podcasting is right for your business — but the evaluation is what is important. .

And this same type of consideration also can be applied to the issue of monetization of podcasting in your business — something that was not so straightforward at the beginning of the podcast community or podosphere.
