67- In support of the NEW MEDIA CONTENT CREATION model from Paul Colligan

Colligan Podcast ReportIn this episode, we attempt to address the buzz and popularity of such live-streaming tools with multiple purposes (like Meerkat, Periscope and blab.im) from the point of view of the Podcaster and a strategy for both content creation and distribution.

We have included some proof-points with some audio clips taken from episode 62 of Paul Colligan’s podcast show called The Podcast Report.

As you will hear in this audio episode, Paul describes a strategy that he delivered since 2009 when he coined the descriptor phrase of The New Media Content Creation Model.  And we support that strategy as  Podcasters who are trying to integrate these new apps and tools into both:

– content creation

and

– content distribution.

Some of us in the podosphere call these new apps “toys” or “shiny new objects” with which we can become obsessed and enamored (even though some of them may still be in beta). We feel that it is important that your strategy for podcasting can integrate these apps so that they are part of your New Media toolbox, and where you can leverage them best by using their strengths to ENHANCE your strategy and your business model — and NOT to replace your podcasting execution by losing time and using other resources you need so you can march to your planned success.

And you will also hear in this audio episode about a possible hidden drawback by focusing on some of these tools too directly — e.g., you may have to commit to do MORE WORK to add the right assets (music, audio intro, outro, sponsorship clips, voice-over, additional encoding, posting and publication, etc.) to create a good podcast episode from the content of these apps.

54- Podcast Movement 2015 Conference – Some reflections

Regretfully, I will not be able to attend the Podcast Movement 2015 event due to major health issues, which have been caused by complications resulting from Agent Orange (the toxin used in Vietnam, and which negatively affected the combat infantrymen on the ground when they were in the jungles and rice paddies and mountains in Vietnam and Laos).

So this episode covers the following topics in the theme of REFLECTIONS:

– Having to miss the networking, personal communications and re-energizing and reinforcing the relationships I had with various podcasters that have become good acquaintances and friends. Among them is one of the co-founders and organizers of the Podcast Movement Conference, Gary Leland (he had a booth in 2014 with the old “Podcast Pickle” who is now re-branded as the “Podertainment Pickle”) — for Gary had a booth for his Podertainment Magazine in the exhibit area:

– Having to cancel my live interview scheduled on 31July2015 with Doug Foresta of the CoachZing podcast show;

– Having to miss Paul Colligan’s meetup;

– Having to miss the workshops which I had signed up for earlier;

– Having to miss the exhibits and announcements;

But most of all, HAVING TO MISS THE PODCASTING HALL-OF-FAME ceremony for the inaugural inductees, as well as the Podcaster Awards ceremonies — scheduled for 31 July 2015.

In speaking about the Hall of Fame ceremony that is scheduled for 31 July 2015, the first inductee is the “PODFATHER” himself — Adam Curry.

52- The Four Steps to becoming a SUCCESSFUL CONTENT CREATOR – with cases-in-point

In this episode, we examine the four steps in the journey to becoming a successful content creator, especially for the podcaster.

Does “success” mean making lots of money? Some of the “newbies”
in the podosphere are making 7 figures, and there are a few who
proudly proclaim their revenues and share them online.

But, no, that may not be the measure of success.

Does “success” mean having enormous stats? Some of the
“newbies” have gazillions of downloads, subscribers, sponsors,
listens, views, audience numbers, etc.

But, no that may not be the measure of success.

According to a couple of key podcasters, the true meaning of
success lies elsewhere in “thought leadership” — but also
with the positive results both in stats and revenue streams.

4 Steps to Content creator success

This content for this episode was inspired by two podcasters,
both who have had over 10 years of experience:

(1) Paul Colligan, podcaster of THE PODCAST REPORT; and

(2) Chris Brogan — podcaster, blogger, author and trainer, among
many other things.

It was Paul Colligan who called myself a “luminary” over a year
ago in his podcast episode, when he described me.
It was also Chris Brogan who described the real measure of
success monetarily, but also emphasized the importance of
“thought leadership.”

Together, they inspired the description of the 4-step journey
from podcaster to thought-leader (the latter being the real
measure of success, in my humble opinion, as the other
mentioned victories in the journey have either been preludes
or learning-steps).

As you will hear in this audio episode, the four steps to becoming
a “successful” CONTENT CREATOR are detailed and described as:

(1) Subject matter expert that develops into a true “luminary”;

(2) Solution-provider or problem-solver;

(3) Trusted advisor; and then,

45- Podcast monetization strategies — an Interview repurposed

Screencasting and Podcasting

  • Screencasting is the technology to capture what’s on your computer screen and save that as a video file.
  • The 4 General Types of Content
    • Audio – narrating, explaining, music, intro-outro, etc.
    • Video –
      • Live action – created with camera [FC note: commonly referred to as “full-motion video”]
      • B-roll – old video files rolled together
    • Presentation slides – sequence of slides delivered via PowerPoint or a similar software, incorporating pictures, words and animations to bring a story to life.
    • Screencasting – showing people how you do something directly on your computer screen. Gives them a peek into the “back office.”
  • Combining the four types of content via a software like Camtasia creates visually compelling content that tells a story and makes people feel more comfortable buying your product or using your service.
  • Itunes is now displaying Video podcasts with a video symbol by it. Sometimes these podcasts are getting more attention than traditional audio only podcasts. Having audio and visual options makes your show attractive to people who like to listen as well as people who want to watch programs and increases your audience.

42- From Paul Colligan’s book ‘HOW TO PODCAST’– a case study

In this episode of PodcastReporter.com, we deliver a chapter (really a case study) from the book by Paul Colligan titled:

How to Podcast 2015: 4 Simple Steps to Broadcasting Your Message to the Entire Connected Planet –Even if you don’t really know what Podcasting is.

This is an audio narration of the chapter of the case study. In the paperback edition of the book, this case study is told from pages 139 to 146. It is the story of Fred Castaneda — a New Media content creator and producer who is a podcaster, screencaster and video consultant for small businesses, startups and entrepreneurs.

The case study centers around how Fred makes his podcasts happen — of course, it is related to the 4 steps that Paul Colligan describes in creating, publishing and promoting podcast shows.

As you will hear in this audio episode, Fred has been podcasting since 2006, and the workflow and processes he adopted were from Scott Whitney’s podcast show in 2006 called Podcasting For Business. They were originally called “The 4 Ps of Podcasting.”

Although Fred had been publishing more than 14 podcast shows all at the same time in 2010, he has podfaded all but 7 of them today. 37- Paul Colligan – early podcaster, Pundit and Author sees vision for podcasting

This audio episode of PODCAST REPORTER delivers the final installment episode of the mini-series that we have started in mid-year 2015, in which we interview those who were the early podcasters (who started podcasting in 2004 and 2005). In addition, this episode will be repurposed in other podcast shows (e.g., Struggling Entrepreneur, Boomers for Startups and Skills in Screencasts and Podcasts). In this episode, we have two topics:

Paul Colligan pre-launches his new book called “HOW TO PODCAST: 4 Simple Steps to Broadcasting Your Message To Smartphones, Connect Cars, Tablets, Televisions And More”

And the next several chapters will deal with case studies of podcasters (who submitted their workflow details to Paul) and how they created and published their podcasts.

23- National Podcast Day — reflections and perspectives

This podcast episode reviews the events and activities of the 30th of September of 2014, known as NATIONAL PODCAST DAY or NPD (www.NationalPodcastDay.com). The following sections describe the activities which this Podcast Reporter attended and/or in which he participated.

National Podcast Day Proclamation

 The morning session was a live stream, hosted by Steven Lee and his son, Dave. Also among the podcast co-hosts were Daniel J. Lewis and Nick Seuberling. There was also a very active chat room which had some interesting visitors, among whom was Paul Colligan of The Podcast Report show. The main topics were discussed were the history of podcasting and some content and events discussions.

We are grateful to Steven Lee for getting this event scheduled and completed for this day about Podcasting. Our thanks go to him for this streaming event.

Daniel J Lewis: Google Hangout on Podcasting

In addition to the live stream, at midday, Pacific time, Daniel J. Lewis of The Audacity to Podcast hosted a 2-hour google hangout for podcasters to gather together electronically and talk about ANYTHING PODCASTING. Questions were asked and answered, and a live chat room contained a lot of activity.

Dave Jackson: Podcasting Meetup in Ohio

Since Dave Jackson from The School of Podcasting is the organizer of the Cleveland Podcasters Meetup, he scheduled his session with his group in person at 7:00 p.m. Eastern time. Within a half hour, they would then be part of the Podcasters Roundtable google hangout on air.

Podcasters Roundtable with the National Podcast Day team

So far, for the past several “rounds” of the Podcasters Roundtable google hangout, Ray Ortega has been consistent in his schedule for this gathering of podcasters. At this round (number 36), the team of National Podcast Day was invited to be the panelists in a celebration and discussion of National Podcast Day.

Paul Colligan:  Free Webcast – How to Podcast

 And to close out the evening with National Podcast Day activities, Paul Colligan of The Podcast Report had an evening webcast with the theme of How to Podcast.

In addition, during the day, Paul Colligan was selling his book on www.amazon.com of THE PODCAST REPORT (episodes 1-15) for 99 cents for non-members of the special amazon.com groups. However, on 1 October 2014, Paul will make this Kindle book free.

[Note: As a matter of fact, this Podcast Reporter purchased it early in the day.]

This was a special promo by Paul to promote his podcast and monetize his ebook from his repurposed podcast episodes. We will be doing a cross-promotion with Paul and his podcast show soon in this series of PodcastReporter.com.

During the webcast, Paul focused on how a podcaster can do so for free using tools like Auphonic and a Smart Phone and some software that he uses. In fact, he published an episode of his other podcast called Thinking Out Loud in a live environment — that is, “live within live.”

.Paul then delivered some suggestions for the podcasters who submitted questions on the chat — ranging from creating your avatar when you plan your podcast to monetization strategies for revenue streams. He also described the six pillars of podcasting within his program called the Podcast Expert Blueprint. The latter is a high-cost program which he has been implementing for other audiences, but he welcomed his audience to check it out, as well.

As a result, the success of National Podcast Day was to create awareness and synergize the community of Podcasting. Steve Lee did a great job in making the Day a reality.

Now, there are many ideas resulting with suggestions for next year’s National Podcast Day — even a recommendation to have the day announced, celebrated and proclaimed in the US Government (as many communities and organizations have done, and are doing so, every day). However, that would take about 10 months of work from organizers and lobbyists in Washington to prepare, nurture, promote and complete. Although I have seen it done before in the non-profit organization environment, it required a lot of time, management, patience, negotiating and lobbying to make it happen.

If the organizers wish to have this aggressive goal reached for the Podcasting community (or, if you will, the Industry), then the work has to start about now and continue for the rest of this year and most of the next.
