29- Perspectives on upcoming Podcasting Hall of Fame

This episode discusses perspectives from THIS REPORTER’S OPINION on the criteria for nominating and selecting worthy candidates for the upcoming Podcasting Hall of Fame to be announced at NMX (New Media Expo) in April of 2015.

Podcasting Hall of Fame announcementAs you will hear in this audio episode, we thank Rick Calvert for making this event possible.

However, this reporter’s opinion discusses aspects and recommendations for focusing on contributions to the podcasting industry/community that have made an impact for the masses to enter and succeed in podcasting.

This goes way beyond any individual’s achievements or accomplishments for just gaining wealth for personal benefit, or for getting zillions of downloads for personal recognition — without any real benefit to the podcasting community or for helping to move podcasting in a growth direction.

In fact, as you will hear, we feel that the only 2 real individuals that merit Hall of Fame induction at this time would be Adam Curry (the “PODFATHER”) and Dave Winer — that is, those who made podcasting possible for us over 10 years ago (not just those who recently came on the scene to either make a ton of money or get a ton of downloads).

The recommendation is that the nominations and selections should include products, tools, programs, companies, offerings and resources that have made such an impact in podcasting — and which were given to the community as a contribution FOR FREE.

These would include the Levelator (intially from Gigavox in 2006), the PowerPress player (from Rawvoice) and Audacity.

There are other resources that have also contributed to podcasting that could also be mentioned — and probably will be soon discussed.

28- Success as podcaster — in spite of disabilities- Matt Cox

Many people take for granted — or assume — that their audiences have all their motor skills and physical faculties. For instance, they can see the video or hear the audio, etc. However, Matt Cox is a determined young man who is visually impaired (i.e., legally blind), but he is a man with a “vision” and objective. Not only does he consume audio podcasts since 2007, but he has also seen success in Corporate America with his career; and he also is in his 6th year as a podcaster.

Matt Cox 2014He is an aspiring Entrepreneur who wants to be a publisher of books — audio books, ebooks and even hard-bound and paperback books.

And in our audio episode, you will hear the interview with him about his current entry as a part-time entrepreneur in the area of podcasting, with a future in publishing.

His podcast show, called BRUNCH WITH THE BRITS, is available for free subscription on iTunes(R). What is remarkable is that he has over 322 episodes of this series.

BWTB on iTunes for Matt CoxIn addition to getting a Bachelor or Arts degree in Communication, he also spent several years in the Peace Corps and served in Morocco. He has also worked in the public sector, but he has really found his home and enjoyment in his work with Marriott Hotel Reservations.

As you will hear in this inspiring audio episode, his future plans include publication of audio books for niche audiences (such as aficionados of old time radio shows, and people with disabilities), as well as other types of publications on the Internet. He also plans to create a podcast network with various podcast shows in the near future.

However, he plans to maintain his part-time entrepreneurship with the “value-for-value” model in his podcasts while continuing his full-time success at Marriott.

Thus, as a part-time solo-preneur (with an administrative assistant who also provides free technical support), it appears that Matt Cox has found a formula that works in the area of New Media, while he maintains his day-job. In fact, up until this year, his podcast did not cost anything. Right now, he is “bootstrapping” his part-time enterprise as a solo-preneur.

His current plans for the near future include the possibility of attending his first NMX (New Media Expo), alongside with the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) event in Las Vegas in April of 2015 — however, if there is a schedule conflict, his employment will ALWAYS take precedence. If and when he does attend the activities of NMX, he will be a very active participant for the awards and the training and education for podcasting and New Media.
