55- Adam Curry – PODFATHER – accepts Hall-of-Fame Award at PM2015

Adam Curry as HOF Inductee - 31July2015Although I cannot physically attend the Podcast Movement 2015 conference in Fort Worth, Texas, I was able to get both the audio and video content of the acceptance speech by THE PODFATHER, Adam Curry, at the evening’s first ever Podcasting Hall of Fame Awards ceremony on 31July2015.

Our thanks to Gene Naftulyev for publishing a twitter tweet that carried the link (see below for tweet link) for the video.

Here, you have both the audio and video portion.

So, what is Adam Curry’s biggest “take-away” from podcasting?…

“To be successful [in podcasting], you have to connect with your audience.”

As you may be aware, Adam Curry started the Daily Source Code (still in iTunes(R)  podcast in the early days over ten years ago, and he currently podcasts his own show called No Agenda, with his co-host John C. Dvorak — aka “THE BEST PODCAST IN THE UNIVERSE.”

54- Podcast Movement 2015 Conference – Some reflections

podcast_reporter_albumartwork1400In this episode, there are regrets and apologies, along with reflections from this Podcast Reporter.

Regretfully, I will not be able to attend the Podcast Movement 2015 event due to major health issues, which have been caused by complications resulting from Agent Orange (the toxin used in Vietnam, and which negatively affected the combat infantrymen on the ground when they were in the jungles and rice paddies and mountains in Vietnam and Laos).

So this episode covers the following topics in the theme of REFLECTIONS:

– Having to miss the networking, personal communications and re-energizing and reinforcing the relationships I had with various podcasters that have become good acquaintances and friends. Among them is one of the co-founders and organizers of the Podcast Movement Conference, Gary Leland (he had a booth in 2014 with the old “Podcast Pickle” who is now re-branded as the “Podertainment Pickle”) — for Gary had a booth for his Podertainment Magazine in the exhibit area:

– Having to cancel my live interview scheduled on 31July2015 with Doug Foresta of the CoachZing podcast show;

– Having to miss Paul Colligan’s meetup;

– Having to miss the workshops which I had signed up for earlier;

– Having to miss the exhibits and announcements;

But most of all, HAVING TO MISS THE PODCASTING HALL-OF-FAME ceremony for the inaugural inductees, as well as the Podcaster Awards ceremonies — scheduled for 31 July 2015.

In speaking about the Hall of Fame ceremony that is scheduled for 31 July 2015, the first inductee is the “PODFATHER” himself — Adam Curry.

Adam CurryAs you will hear in this audio episode, we also cover the question of whether the Podcast Movement conference can repeat the success of 2014.

In addition, there is some feedback from other podcasters about the selection of speakers and keynote speakers for this event.

Finally, we recommend that you listen to the following podcasters and their shows AFTER the conference to get summaries of the event and their perspectives:

Paul Colligan and his The Podcast Report;

Dave Jackson and his School of Podcasting;

Todd Cochrane and his New Media Show;

Adam Curry and his No Agenda Show;

Daniel J Lewis and his Audacity to Podcast show.

41- Update- Hall of Fame for Podcasters — and Bumpers

After having to go on a business trip that took over a week, I apologize to my listeners for my forced absence, and thus not publishing an episode before episode 40 (which was repurposed from an interview I did with Adam Curry).

In this episode, we discuss and bring you up to date with 4 key topics:

(1) The Academy of Podcaster Awards (and point you to an earlier episode where we interviewed Gary Leland, who gave us the details of this and the Hall of Fame);

(2) The first 2 inductees to the Hall of Fame for Podcasters — i.e., ADAM CURRY and Leo LaPorte;

(3) The availability of PODCAST ALLEY at New Media Expo in April, 2015 (i.e., what it is and where to go to sign up for free);

NOTE:

What we had planned to bring to you as an additional report was the topic of Twitter Bombing. However, this topic was completely and very well covered by both Dave Jackson in his School of Podcasting podcast episode, as well as Rob Walch in the podcast called The Feed. Thus, we will not re-invent the wheel, and we will cover bumpers for podcasts instead.

And lastly,

(4) The importance of Bumpers for your podcast episode, including:

– a Bumper for one of my podcasts, the Struggling Entrepreneur, by Leo LaPorte; and

– a discussion on bumpers from Tee Morris, from his Podcast show episodes of  Podcasting for Dummies — the Companion Podcast– with written permission from Tee Morris and Evo Terra, the authors of the original paperback book..

The reason why this podcast show is important is that Wiley Publishing, Inc., who owns the intellectual property for the DUMMIES series, saw success in this free companion podcast (which is still in iTunes(R) today) that they had another printing of the original 2006 book, originally titled as Podcasting for Dummies, as well as a follow-on book called Expert Podcasting Practices for Dummies. The original artwork is well known, and the companion podcast image in iTunes uses the same logo, but with the subtitle as “The Companion Podcast.” We thank Wiley Publishing, Inc., for their foresight and vision in fostering the creation of this companion podcast show and the publishing of these 2 books for the Podcasting Community, as well as their success for these published content pieces.Podcasting For Dummies bookCopyright (c) 2006-2015, Wiley Publishing, Inc. 40- Adam Curry discusses podcast quality and New Media

This is repurposed content from the inaugural episode of Skills in Screencasts and Podcasts, and it delivers an interview with the “Podfather,” Adam Curry, who discusses New Media importance in the areas of podcasting and screencasting.

Adam Curry on wikipedia.org

This interview was conducted at the downtown Austin Hilton Hotel, where the noise was at a high level, but we found the quietest place to be in the business office just off the lobby. We apologize for the background noise and ambient sounds.

Around 2011, there was a movement from the New Media community of content creators to try to get bloggers to add Podcasting to their skills and join the podcasting community — mainly to grow their audience and add another channel for their content.

In 2014, the current movement is to try to get the podcasters to add screencasting to their skill-set — and vice-versa, get screencasters to add podcasting to their skills portfolio. The idea is to grow their audience and increase the possibilities of monetization, generate additional revenue streams and exploit new channels for content distribution.

As you will hear in this audio episode, Adam Curry discusses the models for podcasters and screencasters, as well as quality in the production of New Media content.

About Adam Curry:

Born in 1964, he is “on the cusp” of the Baby Boomer range, and is one of the “last of the official Baby-Boomers.” He also has had a history of financial success in making millions, then spending them all, and then finally of being an Entrepreneur that found happiness by living his passion as a “Government Legislation Analyst” in his latest business of podcasting with his show of No Agenda.

After over 7 years of building a loyal audience, he  has proven that the road to his full-time Entrepreneurship is with the business model which he has proven successful — known as the VALUE-FOR-VALUE model.

But to many others in the New Media arena, Adam Curry is also known as the “Pod-Father” —  since he and Dave Winer created the ability to implement successful podcasting. It was this breakthrough that allowed him to explore audio podcasting and create a show that still has a tremendous worldwide following of loyal listeners (known by Adam as “producers” — like the ones in the Hollywood model of entertainment).

This came after a career with MTV and broadcasting. His media experience saw him as part of Mevio.com, (previously known as Podshow) with different podcasts that he also started (like the Daily Source Code).

However, almost seven years ago, he started his flagship podcast show called NO AGENDA with his co-host, columnist John C. Dvorak. As an entrepreneur, he has developed the format and content of the show.

You will notice that Adam Curry has several “firsts” in his success as a full-time podcaster-entrepreneur:

(1) He provides docoumented deconstruction, information of value and entertainment;

(2) He created his own position and title as a Government Legislation Analyst. Yes, he actually READS, analyzes and deciphers each governmental bill, proclamation, executive order, and United Nations document–and he even highlights the pertinent sections that can provide you, the listener, with critical thinking and and intelligent basis for making decisions and being well-informed. The documents and other valuable information are part of his extraordinary show notes, which are free to the listener from his podcast web site.

(3) He has proven that his business model of VALUE-FOR-VALUE can be a successful one (and so far, a sustainable one) by building a loyal audience and receiving willing donations for the value that the audience receives.

29- Perspectives on upcoming Podcasting Hall of Fame

This episode discusses perspectives from THIS REPORTER’S OPINION on the criteria for nominating and selecting worthy candidates for the upcoming Podcasting Hall of Fame to be announced at NMX (New Media Expo) in April of 2015.

Podcasting Hall of Fame announcementAs you will hear in this audio episode, we thank Rick Calvert for making this event possible.

However, this reporter’s opinion discusses aspects and recommendations for focusing on contributions to the podcasting industry/community that have made an impact for the masses to enter and succeed in podcasting.

This goes way beyond any individual’s achievements or accomplishments for just gaining wealth for personal benefit, or for getting zillions of downloads for personal recognition — without any real benefit to the podcasting community or for helping to move podcasting in a growth direction.

In fact, as you will hear, we feel that the only 2 real individuals that merit Hall of Fame induction at this time would be Adam Curry (the “PODFATHER”) and Dave Winer — that is, those who made podcasting possible for us over 10 years ago (not just those who recently came on the scene to either make a ton of money or get a ton of downloads).

The recommendation is that the nominations and selections should include products, tools, programs, companies, offerings and resources that have made such an impact in podcasting — and which were given to the community as a contribution FOR FREE.

These would include the Levelator (intially from Gigavox in 2006), the PowerPress player (from Rawvoice) and Audacity.

There are other resources that have also contributed to podcasting that could also be mentioned — and probably will be soon discussed.

23- National Podcast Day — reflections and perspectives

This podcast episode reviews the events and activities of the 30th of September of 2014, known as NATIONAL PODCAST DAY or NPD (www.NationalPodcastDay.com). The following sections describe the activities which this Podcast Reporter attended and/or in which he participated.

National Podcast Day Proclamation

 The morning session was a live stream, hosted by Steven Lee and his son, Dave. Also among the podcast co-hosts were Daniel J. Lewis and Nick Seuberling. There was also a very active chat room which had some interesting visitors, among whom was Paul Colligan of The Podcast Report show. The main topics were discussed were the history of podcasting and some content and events discussions.

We are grateful to Steven Lee for getting this event scheduled and completed for this day about Podcasting. Our thanks go to him for this streaming event.

Toward the end of this 2-hour session, Steven Lee read the official Proclamation for National Podcast Day from his local government of Tehacapi in California.

Select this link to listen to the local government Proclamation of NPD.

.

 NPD event:  Organizers live stream acknowledge Adam Curry

During the live stream hosted by the NPD organizers, Steven Lee mentioned the feeds information from the PODFATHER, Adam Curry:

Select this link to listen to the NPD team highlight Adam Curry’s feeds.

.

Daniel J Lewis: Google Hangout on Podcasting

In addition to the live stream, at midday, Pacific time, Daniel J. Lewis of The Audacity to Podcast hosted a 2-hour google hangout for podcasters to gather together electronically and talk about ANYTHING PODCASTING. Questions were asked and answered, and a live chat room contained a lot of activity.

.

Dave Jackson: Podcasting Meetup in Ohio

Since Dave Jackson from The School of Podcasting is the organizer of the Cleveland Podcasters Meetup, he scheduled his session with his group in person at 7:00 p.m. Eastern time. Within a half hour, they would then be part of the Podcasters Roundtable google hangout on air.

.

Podcasters Roundtable with the National Podcast Day team

So far, for the past several “rounds” of the Podcasters Roundtable google hangout, Ray Ortega has been consistent in his schedule for this gathering of podcasters. At this round (number 36), the team of National Podcast Day was invited to be the panelists in a celebration and discussion of National Podcast Day.

.

Paul Colligan:  Free Webcast – How to Podcast

 And to close out the evening with National Podcast Day activities, Paul Colligan of The Podcast Report had an evening webcast with the theme of How to Podcast.

In addition, during the day, Paul Colligan was selling his book on www.amazon.com of THE PODCAST REPORT (episodes 1-15) for 99 cents for non-members of the special amazon.com groups. However, on 1 October 2014, Paul will make this Kindle book free.

[Note: As a matter of fact, this Podcast Reporter purchased it early in the day.]

This was a special promo by Paul to promote his podcast and monetize his ebook from his repurposed podcast episodes. We will be doing a cross-promotion with Paul and his podcast show soon in this series of PodcastReporter.com.

During the webcast, Paul focused on how a podcaster can do so for free using tools like Auphonic and a Smart Phone and some software that he uses. In fact, he published an episode of his other podcast called Thinking Out Loud in a live environment — that is, “live within live.”

.Paul then delivered some suggestions for the podcasters who submitted questions on the chat — ranging from creating your avatar when you plan your podcast to monetization strategies for revenue streams. He also described the six pillars of podcasting within his program called the Podcast Expert Blueprint. The latter is a high-cost program which he has been implementing for other audiences, but he welcomed his audience to check it out, as well.

You can go to the replay of the webcast by selecting the following link:

 _________________________________________

As a result, the success of National Podcast Day was to create awareness and synergize the community of Podcasting. Steve Lee did a great job in making the Day a reality.

Now, there are many ideas resulting with suggestions for next year’s National Podcast Day — even a recommendation to have the day announced, celebrated and proclaimed in the US Government (as many communities and organizations have done, and are doing so, every day). However, that would take about 10 months of work from organizers and lobbyists in Washington to prepare, nurture, promote and complete. Although I have seen it done before in the non-profit organization environment, it required a lot of time, management, patience, negotiating and lobbying to make it happen.

If the organizers wish to have this aggressive goal reached for the Podcasting community (or, if you will, the Industry), then the work has to start about now and continue for the rest of this year and most of the next.
