04- Dave Jackson- Podcaster since 2005 with The School of Podcasting

Since 2005, Dave Jackson has put his educational background of Technical training and teaching into practice, for he has considered himself to be the “headmaster” at the School of Podcasting.

Dave’s history includes being one of the very early adopters and content creators and content producers in Podcasting. As he states himself:

“I’ve been podcasting since April of 2005. My podcast about podcasting has been downloaded over 800,000 times … I’ve helped hundreds of people launch podcasts. You can hear my podcasts on this site [i.e., School of Podcasting] as well as powerofpodcasting.com, morepodcastmoney.com, weeklywebtools.com, logicalloss.com, feedingmyfaith.com, growyourchurchshow.com,  marketingmusician.com”

He also publishes a podcast where he makes his life an open book within the stream-of-consciousness method of personal-life podcasting in Building a Better Dave.

Perspectives from “YOUR PERSONAL PODCAST COACH”

 From Dave’s viewpoint (and from statistics from Rob Walch, VP of Podcaster relations for Libsyn.com — as well as a podcaster himself of the shows The Feed and podcast411), podcasting is growing and will continue to boom.

Although Dave feels that it is not yet an “industry,” the community is skyrocketing, i.e. “up and up and up.”  As you will hear in this audio episode, he cites that his clients who wish to start podcasts or need podcast editing services are new and want to get into podcasting for their entrepreneurial ventures. A great deal of them are in the “frosty-haired” generation — that is, in their late-40s and 50s.

No longer just for the geeks, podcasting is bringing in other audiences. As Dave mentions, many young “YouTube-publishers” are now adding audio podcasting to their business and marketing–and they are bringing their audiences with them..

In his opinion, the benefits for podcasters are greatest at the podcast-specific conferences. The reason:  the one-to-one networking that creates long-lasting personal and business relationships. This was true since the days of Podcast and Portable Media Expos, the New Media Expos, the Podcamps, and the newly formed Podcast Movement.

He feels that podcasting conferences will “pick up” and grow — both nationally and regionally or locally — thanks to the passion of podcasters, both veterans and newbies. These include both Podcamps and local Meetups (i.e., www.meetup.com). Also, the electronic communities will grow, such as the groups on Facebook.com and on google hangouts and webinar jams (such as Podcasters Roundtable).

Dave has seen that little “circles” of tight-knit podcasters exist, where one group has no idea of the existence of the others.

One issue that Dave brought up was the rush of “copy-cats” to build a business around someone else’s successful business model. In particular, we discussed the recent “daily entrepreneur-interview shows” that have launched within the past year. Depending on the business model and the strategy, these imitators may not see success as quickly as they want. Expectations for a quick monetization results may be set too high, because they may have arisen from the “quantity” strategy of cpm-based revenues.

One last issue that we discussed was the re-incarnation of another “University” for the podcasting community with the upcoming program called “Podcast Movement University.”  As stated in the audio episode, it was attempted in 2006 and 2012, and both attempts went nowhere. As Dave said, the jury is still out on this next attempt, and a lot has to do with the business model, as well as creating competition with existing podcasters who already have membership sites and electronic learning centers for podcasters.

And Dave’s final ideas that he shared with us revolved around his excellent customer service to help aspiring podcasters succeed — not only with his School of Podcasting site and Ask the Podcast Coach free electronic weekly meetup for the podcast community, but also because he really becomes a sincere and dedicated Personal Podcast Coach. And thus, he becomes YOUR Personal Podcast Coach (which is his brand and tag line).
